Heal me…

Jeremiah 17:13

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed;
save me and I will be saved,
for you are the one I praise.

The first time I heard this verse, I thought, ‘that is really obvious’. I didn’t see then what I see now. All of us who inhabit this fallen world need both healing and saving. We can look around our world and easily pick out people that are in obvious need of healing and saving, but there are others that look healed, but still are deeply wounded.

If you are a victim of abuse, you know much too well the deep wounds to your soul that come with being a victim. You may have even come to hate yourself. Even after you have been rescued from the abuse there are the vivid memories, the images, the smells, the sounds, the voices that haunt your life. What do you do with all of this stuff? Most of us build walls. We build walls around our hearts to be sure that we can never be hurt like this again. We keep our hearts at a safe distance from everyone including God.

The walls we built aren’t really intentional. The walls make us feel safe and actually make us feel like we are healing. The problem with the walls is that it keeps everyone out, including God. If we keep our hearts walled off from God we can’t be healed. God will not surgically remove the walls we have built with out our permission. This is where Jeremiah 17:14 comes in.

[pullquote position="right"]Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed.[/pullquote]

Heart healing isn’t like a medical treatment where you are under anesthesia and really do not need to participate. We must allow God into the depths of our hearts, into our deepest hurts and fears. Then we must accept the healing He alone can bring. We must believe God for our healing. There is no other source. You may need to demolish the walls around your heart, you may need to hurt some more before you heal, but if you will do these things and believe, you will be able to say, Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed. And trusting in the Word, you will be healed. No more walls, just a heart open to God’s love. The love of God will drive out the fear, so that you can give and receive love fully.

There is nothing obvious about this verse-I was wrong. I understand now the power in these words…

Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed.
Save me, Lord, and I will be saved,
For You are the One I praise

Much Grace
