I am reading through Hosea with #shereadstruth and I had already planned to post my video for How He Loves today but as I read through Hosea 3 today it struck me how appropriate the words to this song are to the whole story of Hosea.
The first line, He is jealous for me. That is exactly what God is demonstrating in Hosea. He knows our sin, He knows our weaknesses, He even knows what we have prostituted ourselves to, and yet He is jealous for us. That is the truth of the love of God. Just as Hosea is instructed to go buy his wife back out of her life of prostitution, we have been bought back at the cost of Christ’s life.
Hosea buys Gomer back and tells her that she will again be his wife and not go back to her life of prostitution. This must have felt very difficult to Gomer, not really like love but more like punishment. She must have felt disoriented and weighed down in the unfamiliar life just as the lyrics use the words…
“loves like a hurricane
I am a tree bending beneath
The weight of His wind and mercy”
I think most of us can identify with feeling somewhat disoriented or at least bent out of our natural shape at times as we grow in sanctification. Becoming more like Christ can be a “windy” process. Yet as we remain in this place that God has us, something incredible happens…
“When all of a sudden I am unaware of
These afflictions eclipsed by glory
I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me”
As the lyrics indicate the weight of sanctification is eclipsed by the beauty of our God and His love.
When I made this video I was struck by the simplicity of the bottom line truth. We are loved. It is so hard to just accept that sometimes. I am loved. You are loved. Right where you are in the midst of not having it all figured out. You are loved.
Kids so easily accept and trust love. As we get older, it gets harder to just be loved and trust that love. God’s love is completely trustworthy for you and me. As a child of The King, there is nothing we can do to make God not love us. So today, just like the kids in the video enjoy that love. Let it sink in and if you feel like it jump up and down.
